To safeguard our environment, what factors should we consider when purchasing our next refrigerated delivery vehicles?
David Richards of quality refrigerated vehicle supplier Fridgexpress gives his opinion.
As several factors contribute to the level of CO2 emissions and "waste" produced by a refrigerated vehicle, there are lots of ways in which operators can ensure "greener" deliveries to their customers. Whilst the make and model of van or vehicle chassis does make a difference, it is the quality of the vehicle insulation and the type of refrigeration unit selected that make the real difference in terms of reducing CO2 emissions, minimising "temperature-loss" and restricting "hard" waste - in terms of redundant parts.
For example, efficient one-piece direct drive refrigeration units, such as Eurofrigo's C2500XT and Skyline models for box vans and panel vans respectively - are factory sealed and have far fewer components than conventional fridges. This eliminates the risk of refrigerant leaking from ancillary pipes and fewer components means less disposable waste at the end of the fridge's operational life. For an even greener solution, the fitting of "all electric" fridge units to standard non-refrigerated vans does not increase the permissible CO2 emission levels set for those vans, which makes for a much cleaner environment. The "all electric" fridges, being standalone, also reduce overall vehicle fuel consumption by around 8% or 2miles per gallon.
The use of refrigeration systems that cut out when the doors are opened at each delivery point also helps to limit temperature seepage into the atmosphere.
In addition, the specifying of top quality vehicle insulation is another essential factor in ensuring high temperature efficiency and low temperature-loss during vehicle operation. For example, RVL's renowned range of panel kits for car-derived and panel van conversions and the company's fully bonded box bodies afford high temperature efficiencies and thermal effectiveness.

Refrigerated vans from Fridgexpress grant
customers a truly winning combination
Newly launched Fridgexpress is "a complete refrigerated vehicle solution" offering customers quick and convenient access to top quality, ATP certified refrigerated vans of their choice. A well-masterminded joint venture between leading players in the temperature-controlled industry, RVL and Eurofrigo, Fridgexpress combines the very latest in refrigeration technology from Eurofrigo with the first-class van insulation and body construction techniques of RVL - providing customers with robust, tried and tested refrigerated vehicle solutions - whether for chilled, frozen or multi-temperature delivery applications.
A senior spokesperson for Fridgexpress told us: "This is an exciting new venture for us given the shared depth and breadth of experience of RVL and Eurofrigo in refrigerated vehicles. Vehicle quality, vehicle availability and service convenience are at the core of the Fridgexpress offering. Customers tell us that these things are important to them. We guarantee to provide premium insulation, premium refrigeration and premium vehicles for a cost-effective price. As we take full control of the body design and build process from "order through to final delivery", we believe that customers will find our service responsive, accessible and professional."
Whilst Fridgexpress customers are at liberty to choose the make and model of van or vehicle chassis which best suits their needs, where preferred they have immediate access to Fridgexpress' readily available range of quality "bespoke" specifications. These are quite literally available "off-the-shelf" and are ideal for those customers requiring less customised van specifications or for customers requiring a brand new fridge vehicle at short notice. Those customers preferring to choose a specific make or model of van or chassis are still assured of a shorter than average, "order to delivery " time frame, because the total refrigerated vehicle build process is undertaken and co-ordinated in-house by the joint venture partners.
The Fridgexpress' spokesperson added: "Naturally, given our experience, we have our preferences for certain makes and models of van and vehicle chassis and we will always seek to advise customers and make recommendations as appropriate. However, we respect the fact that customers have their own preferences and we will always leave the final decision to them. They are also free to specify the type of body insulation and refrigeration unit that they require too, although again, given our knowledge and expertise, we will always make our own proposals."
In terms of the refrigeration systems themselves, operators have options including Eurofrigo's popular, tried and tested, high efficiency, one-piece direct drive refrigeration units - the C2500XT and C2500 Skyline for box vans and panel vans respectively. Purpose-designed with lower running costs in mind, these direct-drive units were the first to be launched into the UK and are in use amongst several operators large and small across the UK. Boasting far fewer components than their counterparts, the C2500 units are not only less prone to failure, but they also require less routine maintenance during their operational lifetime - simultaneously affording users higher reliability and greater efficiency. Alternatively, customers may opt for one of Eurofrigo's ground-breaking and greener, "all electric" B2500 refrigeration units, which offer users multiple benefits including lower CO2 emissions, reduced vehicle fuel consumption, augmented performance and lower maintenance.
In terms of vehicle insulation, customers have access to RVL's renowned range of car-van and panel van conversions which feature the company's innovative interior panel kits which provide a thermally efficient and smooth food-safe lining. Constructed to ATP Class C standards, the van conversions are strong, yet light weight and offer impressive internal load space. Likewise, RVL's well reputed box bodies are fully bonded in construction and afford excellent durability and temperature efficiencies.
Fridgexpress is able to offer customers a range of flexible payment methods to suit their particular business needs. The company can also arrange full vehicle service and maintenance packages as extras for those customers requiring a complete service from one supplier. A range of quality used vehicles are also available.
The spokesman concluded: "Fridgexpress may be a new name, but we believe that customers will get peace of mind when they learn that it is a joint venture between RVL and Eurofrigo - two of the most long established and well reputed companies in the refrigerated vehicle supply industry."

Fridgexpress offers widest choice of fridge vehicle specifications
Fridgexpress, supplier of top quality refrigerated vans, is receiving increased interest in its products with prospective buyers citing vehicle quality and choice, experience and convenience as priorities in their choice of supplier - and often as important as price. Being totally independent of any singly vehicle manufacturer, FridgeXpress is in a position to offer customers the wiodest selection of vehicle models and specifications including car derived vans, medium and long wheel based panel and box vans and fully insulated rigid bodies for higher capacity/weight applications.
"When we contacted FridgeXpress, we quickly realised that the guys had a wealth of refrigeraton experience and didn't hesitate to order our fridge van from them. From past experience we knew that getting sound advice from day one avoids problems further down the line", said Sussex based caterer Peter Jones. The company had previously used a small local supplier who was unfamiliar with the range of specifications available from different manufacturers. "The FridgeXpress team are very knowledgeable and they proposed alternative van types for us to compare and weigh up. This helped us to make a more informed choice and their van gives us a better payload." added Peter Jones.
Another operator of two chiller vans in Hampshire said:"FridgeXpress appealed to me because of it being a joint venture between two renowned industry leaders in refrigerated vehicle bodywork and refrigeration systems respectively. The fact the Eurofrigo offer an eco-friendly battery unit also impressed us. We have specified one of their efficient one-piece direct-drive fridges for this first van, but we will test the water with one of their electric fridge units when our other vehcile is due for replacement."
